OL98: File Attachments Will Not Open When Using Wordmail (182655)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot open a file attachment in a Microsoft Outlook 98 e-mail message if the following two conditions are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Word 97 as your e-mail editor.

  • The message was originally created with the sensitivity set to Private.

RESOLUTION

Choose one of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type "outlook /regserver" (without the quotation marks), and click OK.

    NOTE: There is a space character preceding the slash character (/).

Method 2

To open the file attachment, do not use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor. To choose another format, follow these steps:
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  3. Select a format such as Microsoft Outlook Rich text in the "Send in this message format" list, and then click OK.
  4. Open the message containing the attached file.
  5. Double-click the attachment to open it.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Compose a new mail message using Word as the e-mail editor.
  2. Attach a Word document.
  3. Click Options in the open message and set the sensitivity to Private.
  4. Send the message to yourself.
  5. Open the message and double-click the file attachment.
The file attachment does not open.

NOTE: This is not a problem when using the Microsoft Exchange Client with Word as the e-mail editor.
