XFOR: Problems Removing or Reinstalling Chat Service (182612)

SYMPTOMS

The following behaviors may occur with Microsoft Exchange Chat Service:

  • When you try to remove the Chat service, the process stops responding indefinitely on the Removing Microsoft Exchange Chat dialog box.
  • When you attempt to reinstall the Microsoft Exchange Chat Service, it appears to complete successfully. However, the program will not start.
  • The Chat Administrator key appears dimmed in the registry.

CAUSE

The Chat Administrator permissions are set incorrectly or removed from the registry.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To correct the above listed behaviors and add the Chat Administrator's privileges back to the Chat Administrator's value in the registry, do the following:

  1. Click Start on the task bar and click Run.
  2. On the Open line, type regedt32 and click OK.
  3. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following registry key:

    \Software\Microsoft\Exchange\ChatSvc\Parameters\Accounts

  4. Select the Chat Administrator value, and click Security on the menu bar.
  5. Select Permissions.
  6. On the Registry Key Permissions dialog box, click the ADD button.
  7. Choose the Administrator account for your domain.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close Regedt32 to save the value.
  10. Repeat the reinstall or remove process as you normally would.
