PRJ98: Scheduling Error, Task Does Not Split When Linking Tasks (182270)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you link tasks, you may receive the following error message:
This action will cause a scheduling conflict. Task <n> of '<project name>' is linked to a task that cannot move, and as a result the link cannot be honored.

You can:

Cancel. Avoid the scheduling confilct.

Continue. Allow the scheduling conflict.
NOTE: <n> is the row number of the task, and <project name> is the name of the project.

If you click Continue and then click OK, the tasks will be linked, but the second task will not be split as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do the following:

  1. You turn off the option Updating task status updates resource status.

    NOTE: To find this option, on the Tools menu, click Options, then click the Calculation tab.
  2. You assign Percent Complete to a task that has a resource assigned.
  3. You turn the option Updating task status updates resource status back on.
  4. You link a task as a predecessor to the task from step 2.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Select the two tasks.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Unlink Tasks.
  3. Select the second task.
  4. On the Project menu, click Task Information.
  5. Change the Percent Complete for the task to 0. Click OK.
  6. On the Project menu, click Task Information.
  7. Change the Percent Complete for the task back to the correct value. Click OK.
  8. Select the two tasks.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Link Tasks.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
