OFF98: Toolbar Disappears Behind the Status Bar (181647)

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Turn Off the Status Bar

To use this method, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
2. Click the View tab in the Preferences dialog box.
3. Under Show, clear the Status bar check box and click OK. The floating toolbar that was missing appears.
4. Drag the toolbar to dock it in the location you want.
5. After you dock the toolbar, turn the Status bar back on. To do this, follow these steps:
   
   
   1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
   2. Click to select the Status bar check box.

NOTE: To prevent the problem from occurring in the future, turn off the Status bar or drag toolbars slowly toward the bottom.

Method 2: Delete, Rename, or Move the Toolbar Preference File

CAUTION: Use the following workaround only after you try using the first method. By using this method, any customized settings that pertain to the toolbars are lost.

To use this method, follow these steps:

1. Use the Finder to open the System Folder on your Macintosh computer. Then, double-click the Preferences folder to view the preference files for your system.
2. Find the Office toolbar preference files. These files are the following:

   PowerPoint Toolbars (8)- Toolbar preferences for PowerPoint 98.
   Word Toolbars (8)- Toolbar preferences for Word 98.
   Excel Toolbars (8)- Toolbar preferences for Excel 98.

3. Move, rename, or delete the preference file for the program you are using.
4. Start the program again and determine whether the toolbar problem is resolved.

NOTE: The toolbar preference files store any changes you make to the toolbars in the program. If you have not changed a toolbar, (for example, by moving it), there may not be a toolbars preference file.
