The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Direct Mail Manager for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q180600

SYMPTOMS

When you use Direct Mail Manager to create a mail merge main document in Microsoft Word 97, you are prompted to add a postscript (P.S.). Even if you choose Do Not Include A Postscript, a hidden-text P.S. sample is added to the end of your document. When Direct Mail Manager opens Word and displays your form letter on the screen, the following P.S. appears at the end of the document:

The P.S. is a strong marketing tool. You can repeat the offer, introduce a gift, remind the reader of the expiration date on a special offer, etc.

Note that the hidden text is not printed with your document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can delete the unwanted postscript or you can hide the non-printing characters so that you don't have to see them.

To hide non-printing characters (so that they aren't displayed on screen), follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Under Non-Printing Symbols, click to clear all of the check boxes.
  4. Click OK.
When you click the Show/Hide Paragraph button on the Standard toolbar, hidden text will no longer be displayed on your screen.
