Moving Shared Folders on SBS Can Cause Errors (180409)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0

This article was previously published under Q180409

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server Manage Server console to move share folders for all users (the User Shared Folders directory shared as Users), you may see the following error message:
An error has occurred while moving the folder. Not all files or subfolders have been moved.

CAUSE

Small Business Server automatically does not stop sharing the root folder Users and resets the new share point. Also, the wizard does not parse and assign the permissions immediately.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: Folders that are shared by default during the installation process should not be moved from their default locations.

NOTE: To give users' home directories more disk space, the Users Shared Folders directory can be moved only after all the users have been created and the Set Up Computer Wizard run for each client machine. If the Users Shared Folders directory is moved first, the Set Up Computer Wizard will not be able to read the user list needed for the wizard to work properly.

NOTE: A couple of things to keep in mind when the Users Shared Folders directory is moved. First, the directory permissions for Company Shared Folders are changed and need to be reset back to the default settings. Refer to 189088 for the default settings for the permissions on Company Shared Folders. Second, if at a later time, a user or software needs to be added to an existing client machine or a new client machine needs to be set up, the user list will not be available to the wizard.

Use one of the following methods to resolve this issue:

Method 1

NOTE: Perform these steps before moving all of the shares.
  1. Using the Manage Small Business Server Console, click Manage Shared Folders on the Tasks tab.
  2. Select each folder under the Users Shared Folder directory, then click Unshare a Folder.
  3. Select the main shared folder (Users Shared Folder) you wish to move and then click Move a Folder.

This will allow you to select the root of the folder or subdirectories and move a folder. Here you will see a list of drives that you can move the folder to.

After moving the folder, you will receive a message stating that the move has been completed successfully.
  4. Re-share the unshared directories one at a time by clicking Share a Folder.

Method 2

NOTE: Use this method when you are getting errors on users accounts and when you try to setup a computer for that user and that username does not appear in the select user box in the Setup Computer Wizard (SCW).
  1. Using the Manage Small Business Server Console, click Manage Shared Folders on the Tasks tab.
  2. Select the Users folder then click Unshare a Folder.
  3. View the permissions in Windows NT Explorer by selecting the Users Shared Folders then on the File menu, click Properties, click the Security tab, and then click Permissions.

NOTE: You can also use the Manage Shared Folders option to Control User Access to Shared Folders to view the properties.
  4. Make sure these permissions are set to the default as follows:

    Administrator - Full Control
    Creator Owner - Full Control
    Domain Admin - Full Control
Domain Users - Read & Execute
Server Operator - Change (RWXD) (RWXD)
    System - Full Control

  5. Refresh your screen by pressing F5 (or if you are using the Console select another task).
  6. Using the Console, click Manage Shared Folders.
  7. Click Share a Folder and select the Users Shared Folders and use the share name Users.
  8. When the wizard prompts you for permissions, check the defaults, which should look like this:

Users who can read, edit, and delete files:
    Administrator

Users who can only read files:
    <normal users list>

NOTE: This list can be modified at this time to reflect your specific needs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Small Business Server. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

To work around the problem, leave the Users Shared Folders directory in its default installed location. Go to another drive on the machine, create a directory and share that directory as something other than "users." In this new directory, create users' home directories for your users. Then modify the logon script to automatically map a drive to that user's new home directory.
