WD98: Print Preview Zoom Reverts to First Percentage Selected (180164)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q180164

SYMPTOMS

If you select a zoom percentage while in print preview, the zoom is locked to that percentage when you close print preview. When you select a different percentage the next time you go into print preview, Word will revert to the first zoom set and will not permanently change the new view. That is, by default, print preview will always start with the percentage you selected the first time you used it.

CAUSE

The default cannot be changed from a low zoom setting because print preview needs to start in a low zoom setting (less than 40%) in order for the magnifying glass to zoom out. The magnifying glass is set to zoom out by default.

WORKAROUND

To reset the zoom from print preview, you must delete the Word Settings (8) file. Before you do this, you should read the following article:

180850 What is Stored in the Word Settings (8) File

To do delete the Word Settings (8) file, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word and save any changes to your file.
  2. Double-click the Macintosh HD icon or the icon that designates your hard drive name to open it.
  3. Double-click the System folder, and then double-click the Preferences folder.
  4. Drag the Word Settings (8) file to the Trash.
  5. To empty the Trash, click Empty Trash on the Special menu.
  6. Start Word from its original icon (do not start Word from a document or an alias).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

You can change the default setting to either 10%, 25%, Whole Page, or Two Pages. These settings are less than and not equal to the 40% limit. You can always zoom out from these settings by clicking the mouse button.
