PUB98: Word Story Editing Feature Removes Drop Cap Formatting (179252)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q179252

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word to edit Publisher text that contains Drop Cap formatting, the Drop Cap formatting will be discarded.

NOTE: To use Microsoft Word to edit Publisher text, right-click the text frame, point to Change Text, and then click "Edit Story in Microsoft Word."

CAUSE

The Drop Cap formatting is discarded because the Rich Text Format (RTF) filter and the Word Document format do not support the kind of text formatting necessary to retain the Drop Cap formatting. When you use the "Edit Story in Microsoft Word" command in Publisher, the following takes place:
  1. Publisher converts the selected story to RTF.
  2. Publisher starts Word and passes the RTF formatted file to it.
  3. When you update the story in Word, the information is converted back to RTF and returned to Publisher.

RESOLUTION

After you update the story and return to Publisher, select the paragraphs on which you want to use Drop Cap formatting and click Drop Cap on the Format menu.
