IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Publisher 98 for Windows provides a list of the five most recently accessed Publisher files when you open the File menu. Files you have moved or deleted remain on this list, if they were among the five files you saved most recently.

If you attempt to open one of the erroneously listed files, you receive the following error message:
Publisher cannot find the file you specified. The next dialog box will let you browse to locate the file on your hard disk or floppy disk.

CAUSE

The following key in the registry contains a list of the last five files used by Publisher:
   \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Publisher\Recent File
   List

If you manually delete one or more files, it will not be modified.

This behavior is a normal function of Publisher 98. It is similar to the most recently used files feature available in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To remove a file from the Recent File List key for Publisher, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key:
          \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Publisher\Recent
          File List

  4. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, select the entry you want to remove, and then click Delete on the Edit menu (or press the DELETE key).
In Publisher 98, if you try to open a missing file by using the most recently used file list, Publisher recognizes that the file is missing and updates the Recent File List in the registry.
