The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q178609

SUMMARY

You cannot open a publication created in (or saved by) Microsoft Publisher 98 in earlier versions of Publisher. If you try to open a Publisher 98 publication in Publisher 97, you receive the following message:

Publisher cannot load files from a different version.

Furthermore, if you try to copy one or more objects from Publisher 98 and paste them into Publisher 97, one of the following happens:
  1. Nothing appears in Publisher 97. If you then click the Edit menu, Paste and Paste Special are unavailable.
  2. You receive the following error message:
Not enough memory to access Clipboard.

Windows is low on memory and can't access the clipboard. Save your work and close other applications to free up memory, then try again.
You can, however, copy one or more objects from Publisher 98 and paste them into Microsoft Publisher for Windows, version 2.0. To do this, however, you may have to click Paste Special on the Edit menu in Publisher 2.0 and then click Picture.

MORE INFORMATION

Publisher 98 adds a number of new attributes to each type of frame. When you copy a frame to the clipboard, the data is almost, but not quite, understandable by Publisher 97. Publisher 97 tries to treat the data as though it was created in Publisher 97, and the paste operation fails.

Publisher 2.0 is different enough from Publisher 98 that it can accept the data if you paste it as a picture.

You can copy objects from Publisher 97 and paste them into Publisher 98.
