PRJ98: Bar Styles Based on Flag Fields May Not Display Correctly (178371)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q178371

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, Gantt bar styles defined using Flag fields are not displayed correctly. This problem occurs when you open a file with a table that does not contain the Flag fields. The bars are only displayed correctly when you apply a table that contains the Flag fields.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because bar styles that depend on Flag fields do not recognize the Flag fields until Microsoft Project loads a table that displays them. For example, Microsoft Project cannot apply the NewBar style until a table containing the Flag field is applied.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, insert all the Flag columns that bar styles depend on by following these steps:

  1. Click in a column of the table of the Gantt Chart view.

NOTE: Microsoft Project inserts the column to the left of the selected column.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Column.
  3. In the Field Name list, click the Flag field you are using. For example, click Flag1.
  4. Click OK.
If you do not want to show the Flag fields in the active table, you can make the column width of the flag field 0. When you open the file, Microsoft Project will recognize the flag field and will apply the bar style; however, the flag field will not be visible in the table portion of the Gantt Chart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
