SUMMARY

This article describes how to kick out, ban, or restore a user in a chat room you create or administer with Microsoft Chat.

MORE INFORMATION

A chat room is created by a user who has the right to do so on a server. The creator of the chat room acts as the host, and other users participate as speakers or spectators. A host has the authority to kick out or ban a participant as a way to control the chat room. A host can also restore (or unban) a participant.

To ban a participant in a chat room you host, perform the following steps:

  1. Right-click the participant you want to ban, and then click Ban/Unban.
  2. Click Ban in the dialog box that appears.
The participant cannot reenter the chat room until you unban the participant. If the participant attempts to enter the chat room, he or she sees the following message:
You have been banned from the <mychat> chat room
You can also immediately kick out and ban a participant at the same time. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the participant you want to kick out of the chat room, and then click Kick.
  2. If you want to, click the Also Ban check box to select it, and then click Kick in the dialog box that appears.
When you kick out a participant, you immediately remove him or her from the chat room. As you kick out the participant, you can also type a text message to explain the reason.

You can later unban or restore a participant and allow him or her to sign into your chat room. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the Member menu, click Host, and then click Ban/Unban.
  2. Click the user you want to unban in the list of banned participants, and then click Unban.
Note that depending on how the server recognizes the identification of participants, you may not see the participant's nickname, but only his or her Internet protocol (IP) address, Domain Name Server (DNS) address, or his or her electronic mail address or a combination.
