PRJ: Edits to Summary Task Actual Work Reflected in Subtasks (176303)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000
  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q176303

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you edit Actual Work or % Work Complete on a Summary task, Work and Actual Work will be distributed not only to all the Subtasks that have resources assigned, but also to the Subtasks that do not have resources assigned.

CAUSE

Actual Work and % Work Complete edits on a Summary task are distributed to all tasks indented under it, not just to the tasks with resources assigned.

WORKAROUND

Track Actual Work individually on Subtasks rather than tracking Actual Work on Summary tasks. You can do this by entering Actual Work or % Work Complete to each of the tasks indented under the Summary Task and not to the Summary Task itself.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
