Err Msg: Iexplore.exe Ordinal Not Found (173888)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Internet Explorer 3.02, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Iexplore.exe ordinal not found
The ordinal 386 could not be located in the dynamic link library
COMCTL32.DLL
The ordinal 387 could not be located in the dynamic link library
COMCTL32.DLL
The ordinal 388 could not be located in the dynamic link library
COMCTL32.DLL
Ordinal 654 could not be located in the dynamic link library
EXPLORER.EXE
NOTE: The error messages may be displayed on a blue screen.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if you remove Internet Explorer 4.0 from your computer but not all the Internet Explorer 4.0 files are removed.

RESOLUTION

Check the version information for the following files:

  • Advapi32.dll
  • Iexplore.exe
  • Inetcpl.cpl
  • Shdocvw.dll
  • Shlwapi.dll
  • Wininet.dll
  • Urlmon.dll
To check the version information for a file, right-click the file in Windows NT Explorer, click Properties, and then click the Version tab. If any of these files is listed as version 4.71.<nnnn> (where <nnnn> is any number), rename the file. To rename a file, right-click the file in Internet Explorer, click Rename, type a new name for the file, and then press ENTER.

After you rename the files as necessary, reinstall Internet Explorer 3.02.

MORE INFORMATION

Version number 4.71.<nnnn> signifies a file included with Internet Explorer 4.0. Files included with Internet Explorer 3.02 have version number 4.70.<nnnn>.
