PRJ98: Work Assigned Disproportionately with Multiple Resources (173170)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q173170

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you assign multiple resources to a task that has been assigned work greater than what one resource can do in the duration period, the work assignments are not distributed evenly. For example, if you assign four resources to a single task, which has been assigned 16 hours of work, the first resource will be assigned 6.4 hours of work and the remaining resources will be assigned 3.2 hours of work each.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the resources are assigned using Effort Driven scheduling. The first resource is assigned the full amount of work with units greater than 100%. (In the example described in the "Symptoms" section, the first resource is assigned 200% of the work units.) Then, the remaining resources are assigned with the default 100% units and the amount of work is distributed reflecting the ratio of units.

For more information about Effort Driven scheduling, click the Office Assistant, type Effort Driven scheduling, click Search, and then click to view Effort-driven scheduling.

NOTE: If the Assistant is hidden, click the Office Assistant button on the Standard toolbar. If Project 98 Help is not installed on your computer, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
