XL97: Error Message Appears Sorting a Field in a PivotTable (172279)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to sort a field in a PivotTable, the following error message appears:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, an error message similar to the following appears:
Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.exe at 0137: 3014e35f.
If you click Close, the program closes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:
  • You create a PivotTable with more than one row field. -and-

  • You merge row labels in the PivotTable. -and-

  • You sort a column in the PivotTable.

WORKAROUND

Before you sort data in a PivotTable, clear the Merge Labels check box in the PivotTable Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
