The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1a
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 4.0
  • Microsoft Team Manager

This article was previously published under Q170941

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Vendor Independent Messaging (VIM) based e-mail system, Microsoft Project and Microsoft Team Manager will fail to load the e-mail system correctly if complete path to the Vim.dll file is not listed in the path environment variable.

CAUSE

Microsoft Project and Microsoft Team Manager require that the full path to the Vim.dll file be defined in the Path environment variable in order for the VIM-based e-mail system to function correctly.

NOTE: A network login script can append to or rewrite the Path environment variable when you log on to a network.

RESOLUTION

To determine if the Vim.dll file is on the path, check the Path environment variable, using the appropriate method for your operating system:

Windows 95

  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and click MS-DOS Prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type set, and press ENTER.

Windows NT 4.0

  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories and click Command Prompt.
  2. In the Command Prompt window, type set, and press ENTER.

Windows NT 3.51

  1. Open the Main program group.
  2. Double-click the MS-DOS Prompt icon.
  3. Type set and press ENTER.
If the Path variable does not contain the complete path to Vim.dll, correct the path, using the following steps:

Windows 95

Using a text editor such as Notepad, open the Autoexec.bat file and change the path to reflect the full path to the Vim.dll file.

Windows NT 4.0

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Environment tab.
  4. In the System Variables list, select Path.
  5. In the Value box, type the full path to Vim.dll file.
  6. Click Set.
  7. Click OK.

Windows NT 3.51

  1. Open the Main program group.
  2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click System.
  4. In the System Variables list, select Path.
  5. Edit the path information to include the full path to Vim.dll.
NOTE: For both Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 you must have Administrative privileges before you can change the system environment variables.

The changes you made to the Path environment variable will take effect when you reboot your computer.
