MSPWS Repeatedly Prompts for User Name, Password (168818)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Personal Web Server 1.0 for Windows 95
- Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack
- Microsoft Personal Web Server 1.0a for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q168818 For a Microsoft FrontPage 98 version of this article, see 194482.
SYMPTOMS
FrontPage does not accept the name and password you typed in the Name
And Password Required dialog box, and prompts you repeatedly for your
name and password. This behavior occurs even if you typed the correct
user name and password.
CAUSE
In many cases, this behavior occurs when you enter an invalid user name
and/or password in the Name And Password Required dialog box. However, you
may also experience this behavior if you are running the Microsoft Personal
Web Server and you attempt to author against the server from a remote
computer. This occurs because the Microsoft Personal Web Server enforces
security settings when you attempt to access it from a remote computer.
This behavior occurs when you attempt to open the <Root Web> or create
a new Web from a remote computer, if all of the following are true:
- The computer hosting the Web is using user-level access control.
(To locate this option, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon,
click Properties, and then click the Access Control tab.)
-and-
- The <Root Web> is hosted on the Microsoft Personal Web Server.
-and-
- There are no users or groups granted author or administrator access
on the Users and Groups tabs of the Permissions dialog box (click
Permissions on the Tools menu) for the <Root Web>.
RESOLUTION
To allow users (including the original author of the Web) to author and
administer the <Root Web> or subwebs remotely, set permissions for the
<Root Web> or subwebs using FrontPage Explorer.
