GW: "Gworkshp Caused a General Protection Fault in Module GDI.exe" Error Message (165581)

SYMPTOMS

After starting Greetings Workshop and starting a project, you may receive the following error message:
Gworkshp caused a general protection fault in module GDI.exe

-or-

Gworkshp caused a general protection fault in module KERNEL32.DLL

-or-

Gworkshp caused a general protection fault in module user.exe
The error usually occurs when you click on the type of card you want. It may also occur when you click the Create It button.

CAUSE

This behavior usually occurs on computers with a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 series video card.

It has also been found to occur with The Diamond Viper 300 in GW1.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, try Option 1 first. If that does not resolve the issue, then try Option 2.

Option 1

Turn the hardware acceleration down to Basic. To do so, follow these steps before you start Greetings Workshop:

  1. On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
  3. Move the hardware acceleration slider to one notch above none. This will still allow the basic accelerator functions. This setting is used to correct more severe problems, such as unexpected errors in programs.
  4. Click OK and OK again to return to the desktop.

Option 2

Remove the In Control program from the Start-up menu. To do so, follow these steps before you start Greetings Workshop:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Click the + symbol next to your Windows folder.
  3. Click the + symbol next to your Start Menu folder.
  4. Double-click the Startup folder.
  5. Locate and delete the In Control shortcut item.
  6. Restart your computer.
NOTE: The In Control program is the desktop control program for the Diamond Stealth card.
