PPT97: Objects from CorelDRAW! 7.0 or Canvas 5.0 Paste in Blank (164872)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q164872

SYMPTOMS

When you paste a CorelDRAW! version 7.0 or Canvas for Windows version 5.0 graphic into PowerPoint 97, it appears as a blank rectangle.

CAUSE

PowerPoint attempts to paste the CorelDRAW! or Canvas object as an OLE object. When PowerPoint queries the source of the object to determine if it is an enhanced metafile, the OLE source confirms that it is, but PowerPoint does not recognize the screen representation as a valid enhanced metafile and pastes the object as a blank rectangle.

NOTE: Although CorelDRAW! 7.0 and Canvas 5.0 objects appear blank when you place them on your slide, the objects appear correctly if you use the Paste Special command on the Edit menu and insert the object using the Picture format.

WORKAROUND

If you pasted the object, double-click the blank rectangle. When the picture opens in CorelDraw! or Canvas, click outside the picture to close the object and return to PowerPoint. If the picture does not appear, do the following:
  1. Double-click the blank rectangle to start CorelDRAW! or Canvas.
  2. Select all of the objects that comprise the graphic.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Click outside the picture.
  5. In PowerPoint, click Paste Special on the Edit menu. Select the Picture format in the As box and click OK.
