Neverhood: Error Initializing DirectSound (163791)

SYMPTOMS

When you run The Neverhood, you receive the following error message:
Error initializing DirectSound.

CAUSE

This can occur if the default preferred sound device listed in the Multimedia Control Panel is not compatible with the program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, select another preferred sound device. To change your preferred sound device, do the following:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Multimedia.
  3. In the Playback area, click the Preferred Device list.
  4. Select another device from the list.

    For example, select SB16 Wave Out or Game Compatible.

    NOTE: Your actual device selection depends on the type or types of sound cards installed on your computer.
  5. Click OK.
