PUB: Some or All PageWizard Icons Missing from PageWizard Tab (163568)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97
  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q163568

SYMPTOMS

There are no icons or some of the icons are missing for the Page Wizard Design Assistants. To view the Page Wizard Design Assistants, start Publisher or click Create New Publication on the File menu.

CAUSE

This problem occurs in the following cases:

Case 1

The PageWizard icons do not appear when the registry key that stores the information about the Page Wizards is damaged or missing.

Case 2

You selected a custom installation when you ran Microsoft Publisher setup and chose not to install the Automated Design and Instruction component.

Case 3

The Mspub.exe file is not located in the folder (such as, the \Program Files\Microsoft Publisher folder) that also contains the PageWiz folder.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, choose the appropriate method:

Case 1

  1. In Windows Explorer open the \PageWiz folder. Note that by default this folder is located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher folder.
  2. Double-click each registration entry (.reg) file. Click OK when you receive a message indicating that the <filename>.reg file was successfully registered.

NOTE: If you do not see the file name extension, do the following:
    1. On the View menu, click Options, and click the View tab.
    2. Click to clear the "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types" check box.
    3. Click OK.

Case 2

Run Microsoft Publisher setup in maintenance mode and install the Automated Design and Instruction component.

Case 3

Search your hard drive for all copies of the Mspub.exe file. If you find one copy of the Mspub.exe file, move it to the folder that contains the PageWiz folder. By default, this is the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher folder.

If you find more than one copy of Mspub.exe, delete or rename all copies, except the one in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher folder.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
