Works: Accents May Not Display on Some Extended Characters (158626)

SYMPTOMS

If you use extended characters containing accents in a Word Processing document, the accents may be cut off or not display properly, although they print and display in Print Preview correctly. This is particularly noticeable with characters such as ALT+0197 and ALT+0124.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following procedures.

Switch to Normal View

The problem only occurs in Page Layout view. Switching to Normal view will resolve the issue.
  1. Open the Word Processing document containing the accented characters.
  2. On the View menu, click Normal.
The character accents should now be visible.

Increase the Line Spacing

  1. Open the Word Processing document containing the accented characters.
  2. Select the document text.
  3. On the Format menu, click Paragraph.
  4. In Works 4.x, click the Spacing tab, increase the Line Spacing from Auto or 1li to 2li, and then click OK.

    In Works 2000, click the Spacing tab, increase the line spacing from Single to 1.5 Lines, Double, Triple, or Quadruple, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Most HP Laserjet 4 and 5 printers exhibit this problem, with the exception of those printing in Postscript. However, the HP Laserjet 2 and 3 printers as well as the standard HP Laserjet do not. The problem has also been documented with the Epson AL-1600 and the Canon LBP-860.

Choosing an emulation driver may resolve the problem.

To find an emulation, consult your printer documentation or contact your printer manufacturer.
