WD: Can Use Only Latest Version of Word to Insert OLE Objects (157808)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95 7.0a

This article was previously published under Q157808

SYMPTOMS

Inserting a Microsoft Word Document object in Word 95 starts a Word 97 document session.

CAUSE

Microsoft Word allows for only one Word OLE server on a system.

STATUS

This functionality is by design of Microsoft Word for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word does not allow multiple Word OLE servers to coexist on the same system. If Microsoft Word 97 and Microsoft Word 95, version 7.0 are installed on the same system, any attempt to insert a Microsoft Word Document object into Word 95 results in a Word 97 document object being inserted. This is because the Word OLE server registers itself into the Windows Registration database. Only the latest OLE server installed and registered is available as an OLE object.

Microsoft does not support multiple OLE servers on the same system.

To insert a Word document as an OLE object:

  1. Start Word.
  2. In a document, click Object on the Insert menu.
  3. On the Object dialog, click the Create New tab. Under Object Type, click Microsoft Word Document, then click OK. A new Word document appears on the screen.
  4. After creating the new Word document, on the File menu, click "Close & Return to <document name>".
