Money 5.0: Problem Retrieving Online Setup Information (156886)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money 97

This article was previously published under Q156886

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to configure Online Services in Money 5.0, you may receive the following error message:
There was a problem retrieving the Online Services setup files.
You can try to connect again or cancel online setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

If you receive the error message when Money is downloading information from your financial institution, there may be a problem with a specific piece of information about your bank that Money is attempting to download.

If you receive the error message before Money downloads any information from your financial institution, you may have a problem with the method of connection, or a problem resolving the name of the server using the Domain Name System (DNS) name resolution. If the status bar in the Downloading Information does not change, try one of the following methods:

  • Delete Money's Dial-Up Network Connection.
  • Verify the Money Online Server Type settings.
  • Disable DNS.
  • Verify dlls, remove Money and reinstall.

Delete Money's Dial-Up Connection

To delete Money's Dial-Up Connection using the Dial-Up Network Services, do the following:
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking. (If the Welcome to Dial-Up Networking screen appears, click Cancel.)
  3. Right mouse click the Money Online Dial-Up Connection and click Delete.
  4. Start Money.
  5. Run Online Setup or Update Contact Information. Money recreates the Money Online Dial-Up Connection.

Verify Money Online Server Type Settings

Verify that the correct settings are used when connecting by using the following steps:
  1. On the Accounts tab in Home Banking, click Setup Online Services, and then click Next.
  2. Enter your financial institution's Identification Number and click next.
  3. Click Change Modem, and then click Server Type and verify the following:
    1. The Type Of Dial-Up Server is correct for your version of Windows.
    2. In the Advanced Options section, the Log On To Network box is cleared.
    3. In the Allowed Network Protocols section, only the TCP/IP box is checked.
  4. After verifying these settings, click OK twice to return to the Online Services Setup Wizard.
  5. Click Connect and attempt the call again.

Disable DNS

Some Internet Service Providers require that you enable a specific DNS address. To disable this temporarily when setting up Money for Online Services, do the following:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network.
  3. On the Configuration tab, in the The following network components are installed box, click TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter or TCP/IP ->, and then click Properties.

NOTE: If there is more than one reference to TCP/IP you may need to try each reference to find the following tab.
  4. Click the DNS Configuration tab, and record all information in the fields, so that you can re-enable DNS later. IMPORTANT: Windows 95 does not retain the DNS settings after DNS is disabled. It is essential that you record all settings before disabling DNS.
  5. Click Disable DNS.
  6. Click OK to close each dialog box, and then close Control Panel.
  7. Set up Money for Online Services.
After successfully setting up Online Services in Money, you can re-enable DNS, by repeating the steps above. In step 4, click Enable DNS using the information previously recorded.

Verify Dlls and Remove Money 97 and Reinstall

Money installs several system level files called Dynamic Link Libraries (dlls) for communications. If you have installed other Internet or communications software, it is possible that the versions of these files on your system are incompatible with Money.

In Windows Explorer, verify the versions of the following files found in the Windows\System folder. Right-click on each and then click Properties. The version information is found on the Version tab.

NOTE: To make sure that you can see these files, On the View menu, click Options. Click Show all files and make sure that the Hide MS-DOS File Extensions box is clear.

For example, if renaming the Url.dll, you would type:

  6. Repeat the above step for all files with incorrect versions.
  7. Restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

When you first connect during Online Services Setup, and when you Update Contact Information, Money connects you to a computer that will update your data file with information such as logos, sign-up information, Internet addresses, Phone numbers, addresses, comments, and the bank's preferred online service.

Usually you will only need to connect to this "branding server" once to get this information. You may need to connect to this server again if you needed to run setup again, refresh the bank data, setup online services for another bank, or the bank has changed their information and notified you to Update Contact Information.

The connection to access Online Services is independent of this connection to the branding server.
