PUB: Problems If Publisher Folder Name Begins With a Space (155241)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97
  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q155241

SYMPTOMS

If you install Publisher to a folder name that begins with a space (for example, C:\ Publisher) you cannot run the Introduction to Publisher or any of the PageWizard Design Assistants. When you run Publisher for the first time, you see the following error:
File not found: 'THREED.VBX'.
If you click OK, you see the following additional error:
NEWINTRO
Unexpected error; quitting.
If you click Close, Publisher may stop responding to your mouse clicks and keyboard commands.

You receive a similar set of error messages when you try to run any of the PageWizard Design Assistants.

CAUSE

The Introduction to Publisher and the PageWizard Design Assistants were written in Microsoft Visual Basic. Programs written in that particular version of Visual Basic do not run well from folders whose names begin with a space.

RESOLUTION

If you use Publisher Setup to remove Publisher, and then install Publisher again to a folder whose name does not begin with a space, these problems are resolved.

You can, instead, use Windows Explorer to change the name of the folder that contains Publisher to a name that does not begin with a space. If you do this, however, the shortcut on the Start menu won't work. You must manually update the shortcut. Please see your Windows 95 documentation and online help for information about working with shortcuts.
