MORE INFORMATION
To troubleshoot problems using the audio features of NetMeeting, perform
the following steps. After performing each step, check to see if the
problem has been resolved.
Step 1: Can You Use the Audio Features of NetMeeting?
Verify that the person you are connecting to can use the audio features,
that you are not hosting a conference, and that you did not place a data-
only call.
If the person you are connecting to cannot use the audio features of
NetMeeting, you are unable to use the audio features when you connect to
that person. To determine if you are unable to use the audio features of
NetMeeting because the person you are connecting to is unable to use the
audio features, connect to another person that you know is able to use the
audio features. If you are able to use the audio features then, the
problem is caused by the fact that the person you originally connected to
cannot use the audio features of NetMeeting.
When you host a NetMeeting conference, you cannot use the audio features
of NetMeeting. If you are unable to use the audio features of NetMeeting
because you are currently hosting a conference, there is no way to use the
audio features without ending the conference and starting another meeting.
By default, NetMeeting attempts to use the audio features when you place a
call. However, you can use the Advanced Calling command on the Call menu
to specify that the audio features should not be used for a particular
call. If you are participating in a meeting and are unable to use the
audio features because you started the meeting by placing a data-only
call, there is no way to use the audio features without restarting the
meeting.
Step 2: Check the Sound Card Driver Configuration and Functionality
Verify that the sound card drivers are undamaged and are configured
correctly.
For information about how to do this, contact your hardware manufacturer.
If the sound card drivers you are using are configured incorrectly or are
damaged, note that you may be able to work around the problem by
reinstalling the drivers from the disk provided by the hardware
manufacturer.
NOTE: The sound card drivers included with Windows do not support full-
duplex audio. If your sound card supports full-duplex audio, you must
obtain full-duplex drivers from the manufacturer of the sound card to use
full-duplex audio in Windows. To determine if your sound card is
configured for full-duplex audio, start two instances of Sound Recorder.
Using both instances of Sound Recorder, play a Windows sound (.wav) file
and record a .wav file simultaneously. If you are able to do so, your
sound card supports and is configured for full-duplex audio.
Step 3: Check for Device Driver and Memory Resident Program Conflicts
Verify that the device drivers and memory-resident programs loading in the
Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, System.ini, and Win.ini files are not
conflicting with the audio features of NetMeeting. For information about
troubleshooting problems with incompatible device drivers and memory-
resident programs in Windows, please see the following articles in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Step 4: Is the Sound Card Compatible with Windows?
Verify that the sound card installed in your computer is compatible with
Windows. The Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) contains a
list of computer systems and peripherals that are compatible with Windows.
For information about obtaining the Windows HCL, please see the
following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Step 5: Use the Audio Features Portion of the NetMeeting Troubleshooter
Use the portion of the NetMeeting Troubleshooter that corresponds to
the audio features of NetMeeting. To do so, view the "NetMeeting
Troubleshooter" topic in NetMeeting Help, click "I'm having trouble
using the audio features," and then follow the instructions on the
screen.
Additional Notes About Why Audio Features May Not Be Working
- To use the audio features of NetMeeting, you must be using a LAN or
Internet connection with the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP). In addition, the audio features of NetMeeting
cannot be used by more than two participants in a single meeting.
- If you are using a 14,400 bits per second (bps) modem connection to
connect to the Internet, you may be able to improve audio performance
in NetMeeting by reducing the number of programs that are running in
Windows. This includes programs associated with NetMeeting features,
such as Chat, Whiteboard, and other shared programs.
- You cannot play sound (.wav) files in Windows when NetMeeting is
running and the audio features of NetMeeting are enabled. For more
information about this issue, please see the following article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
154781 Sounds Not Played While Using Audio Features in NetMeeting
- If you have more than one sound card installed in your computer, you
can use the Audio Tuning Wizard to select the sound card you want to
use with NetMeeting. The Audio Tuning Wizard runs automatically the
first time you run NetMeeting. To run the Audio Tuning Wizard after
running NetMeeting for the first time, click Audio Tuning Wizard on
the Tools menu.
