Works 95: Shared Components Remain on Server After Local Install (152565)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0
- Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0 4.0a
This article was previously published under Q152565 SYMPTOMS
You may notice the files for the shared components remain on the server
after a workstation installation even if you chose to install them locally
on the workstation.
During an administrative installation of Works 4.0 you can specify where
the shared components such as Draw, ClipArt, and Spell Checker, are
installed when you run Works at a workstation. The options are Server, all
components remain on the network server, Local, shared components are
installed on the workstation, or Users Choice, either server or local.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by entries in the Registry pointing to the server
location of the files. If you installed the shared components to the server
and later changed the location to the local machine; the workstation will
still attempt to use the files on the server.
RESOLUTION
You must first run Works Setup, choosing Remove All, to clear the Registry
entries pointing to the server and then install the files locally.
Install Works Locally
To remove and reinstall Works locally on the workstation do the following:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft
Works 4.0, and then click Microsoft Works 4.0
Setup.
- Click Remove All.
- When you receive messages to remove shared components, choose
Remove All.
- You may run Works Setup from the original disks after Setup is
completed or if you chose User's Choice option during
Administrative Setup, run Setup from the Works folder on the
server.
If you have attempted to install the files locally, you must run Works Setup again and install the shared components on the server to correct the
Windows Registry. Then run Works Setup and Remove All to remove the
Registry entries before installing Works locally.
Install Shared Components on the Server
To install the shared components on the server, do the following:
- Click Start, point to Programs and click Windows
Explorer.
- In the C:\Msworks\Setup40 folder, delete the file, Setup.stf.
- Connect to the Msworks folder on the server and double-click on
Setup.exe.
- Click Install The Shared Components on the server.
- After Setup is complete, follow the steps in the previous
section to remove and reinstall Works locally.
NOTE: If you will be installing Works on the workstation and want to leave the program files on the server (for the Workstation option, not a Complete or Custom installation), you may need to run the Administrative Setup and choose Local or User's Choice options before installing the shared components on the workstation.
