Err Msg: Warning: Windows Multi-Boot May Not Function... (148921)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows 98
This article was previously published under Q148921 SYMPTOMS
When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message:
Warning: Windows Multi-boot may not function correctly. Check for
system files in your root directory with conflicting extensions.
After you receive this error message, Windows starts normally.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if one or more of the following files exists in
the root folder of the boot disk:
- Autoexec.dos
- Autoexec.w40
- Command.dos
- Command.w40
- Config.dos
- Config.w40
- Msdos.dos
- Msdos.w40
RESOLUTION
Rename the files with .w40 extensions to names with an extension other
than .w40. Rename the files with .dos extensions to names with an
extension other than .dos.
MORE INFORMATION
When you boot Windows to the previous operating system, it renames the
existing Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Command.com, and Msdos.sys files to
files with an extension of .w40. It then renames the previous versions of
these files from the .dos extension to the normal extension.
When you boot back into Windows, the Autoexec.bat, Config.sys,
Command.com, and Msdos.sys files from the previous operating system are
renamed back to an extension of .dos, and the .w40 files are renamed back
to their normal extensions.
These files will not prevent Windows from dual booting.
