PUB: Windows 95 CD-ROM Splash Screen Hides Publisher Setup (148634)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q148634

SYMPTOMS

When you run Publisher Setup, Setup may prompt you to insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM so it can copy the PostScript printer driver. After you insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM, the Windows 95 startup (or "splash") screen may appear in front of the Publisher Setup screen. This screen will remain and Publisher Setup will not continue until you either close this screen or manually switch back to Publisher Setup.

CAUSE

The Windows 95 CD-ROM contains a file called Autorun.inf. This file instructs Windows 95 to run a program called Autorun.exe which in turn displays the splash screen.

RESOLUTION

To bypass the Windows 95 splash screen, hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM. Continue to hold the SHIFT key down for 3 to 5 seconds after the CD-ROM is in the drive.

If Autorun.exe does start, you can close it by clicking the "x" in the upper-right corner of the window. After you exit Autorun.exe, you can continue with Publisher Setup.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
