SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert an extended character (such as an acute, circumflex, umlaut, or tilde) with the CAPS LOCK key activated, the extended character may appear before the appropriate character instead of directly above it.

RESOLUTION

To insert an uppercase extended character correctly, follow these steps:

  1. Press down and hold the OPTION key while you press the appropriate key used for the extended character.
  2. Press down and hold the SHIFT key while you press the appropriate character.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs in most programs on the Macintosh. This is not a limitation of Microsoft Works, but rather the standard manner in which extended characters are created on the Macintosh.
