WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

PowerPoint 7.0 uses a key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER to find the translator for converting files from previous versions. If a different user logs on, that user has a different HKEY_CURRENT_USER profile and, therefore, that user doesn't have the correct information to get to the key. PowerPoint 7.0b puts this key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

PowerPoint Makes Read/Write Call to Windows NT Registry; Violates C2 Security

PowerPoint 7.0 tries to open some registry keys with read/write privileges, when it needs only read access. Users may not have write access, which causes PowerPoint to fail. PowerPoint 7.0b makes the registry call read-only.

PowerPoint 7.0b makes the correct call.
