IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, you are able to set several levels of protection for your menu bars by changing the setting for Menu Bar Protect.

If you are using Project 4.0 for Windows

You can find Winproj4.ini file in the \Windows folder.

To edit this file, first close Microsoft Project, and then open Winproj4.ini in a text-only editor such as Notepad.

If you are using Project 4.0 for the Macintosh

The MS Project Settings (4) file is located in the System Preferences folder.

To edit this file, first close Microsoft Project, and then open the MS Project Settings (4) file in a program such as Microsoft Word, and save as text.

If you are using Project 4.1 for Windows 95

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

The Menu Bar Protect setting is found in the Windows 95 and Windows NT registry at the following location:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Project\4.1\Options\General
				
If you are using Windows 95, you can search for the above registry entry by performing the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type Regedit. Click OK.
  3. On the Registration editor Edit menu, click Find. Type "Menu Bar Protect". Click OK.

    NOTE: If you are in Windows NT, open the registry editor, Regedt32.exe.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

Menu Bar Protect Settings

The following table indicates the available settings for Menu Bar Protect.

   This setting   Means this level of protection

        1         Cannot Edit Standard, Standard (no file) menu
                  Cannot rename Standard, Standard (no file) via Organizer
        2         Cannot Edit Standard, Standard (no file) menu
                  Cannot change setting for default menus
                  Cannot rename Standard, Standard (no file) via Organizer
        3         Cannot switch menus or cannot customize any menu.
                  Menu Bars tab disabled in Organizer
                  Menu Bar command disabled on all menus or any toolbar
                  button that references a menu bar command.
