This article was previously published under Q141415

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project for the Macintosh version 4.0, when you open a consolidated file created with Microsoft Project for Windows 95, you will receive the following error message
Cannot find '<file name>~.mpp'
where <file name> is the path to and name of the file.

If you open the file by clicking the Open button on the toolbar, you will receive the error message:
The file '<file name>~.mpp' could not be opened. Continue consolidation without '<file name>~.mpp'?

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you open a consolidated file created in Microsoft Project for Windows 95 and the project either contains a component file that has a space in the name or the file name exceeds eleven characters (8.3).

WORKAROUND

In order to open the consoldiated file on the Macintosh, use component file names that have a maximum of eight characters with a three character extension (8.3).

You can also open the consolidated (multi) project on the Macintosh and when the message "This project cannont be opened successfully. Do you want to access its Organizer information?" is displayed, click Yes. Reconsolidate the component projects on the Macintosh and after finishing, use the Organizer to move custom formatting and such from the original multi project to the new multi project.
