ACC: Microsoft Access Setup Errors Occur in Windows NT (141372)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Access on a computer that runs Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51 or Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Msjtrclr.dll could not be registered.

-or-

Can't create System.mdw.

-or-

An error has occurred at changing workgroup database.

-or-

Disk or Network error.
These same errors may also occur when you install Microsoft Access through the Professional Edition of Microsoft Office.

Note The "Disk or Network error" message can also occur when you try to run Microsoft Access 97.

CAUSE

This error occurs because you have a setting that is not valid for the TEMP or TMP environment variables. This error also occurs if the drive that is specified for the TEMP or TMP environment variable does not have enough free disk space.

RESOLUTION

To verify or to set the TEMP environment variable, follow these steps:
  1. For Windows NT 3.51, in Program Manager, double-click the Main icon, and then in this icon group, double-click Control Panel icon.
  2. For Windows NT 4.0, double-click the My Computer icon, and then in the My Computer window, double-click Control Panel icon.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.
  4. Notice the last three boxes in the System dialog box that are named User Environment Variables for <username>, Variable, and Value, respectively. These three boxes are used to set or to update the TEMP environment variable. Examples of valid settings follow:
    • TEMP = C:\TEMP
    • TMP = C:\TEMP
    To set up these examples, follow these steps:

    1. In the Variable box, type temp.
    2. Press the TAB key to move to the Value box, and then type c:\temp.
    3. Click the Set button to add these values to the User Environment Variables for <username> box.
  5. To create the TMP environment variable, repeat step a through step c.
  6. Click OK to close the System dialog box. Close Control Panel, and then close Main.
  7. Start File Manager and then locate a directory with the same name and the same location that is listed in the User Environment Variables for <username> box.

    If no TEMP directory exists, create one. If the directory has a different name or a different location, you can repeat step 1 through step 3 to update the TEMP environment variable.
  8. Verify that the drive that contains the TEMP directory has enough disk space. If this number is less than 4,000,000 bytes (4 MB), remove unnecessary files to create more disk space.
  9. Verify that the TEMP directory is empty.

    If files exist, you can delete any .tmp files that are not currently in use. These files generally have a modified date earlier than the current session of Windows.

    Note It is a good idea to quit all Windows programs before deleting any .tmp files.
  10. After you have a valid TEMP directory, reinstall Access.

    If you receive the "Can't create System.mdw" error, then run the Workgroup Administrator (Wrkgadm.exe) program to create a new System.mdw.
