SYMPTOMS

The index in a Word document shows a particular item but does not show all the page numbers on which the item appears.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when ALL the following are true:
  • An XE field appears on a certain page of the document (for example, page 2).
  • An identical XE field appears on the corresponding page of another chapter (for example, page 2 of another chapter).
  • No other identical XE fields appear between these.
  • Chapters are numbered with Heading Numbering.
  • The page number format is Include Chapter Numbers.
For example, if the word "Report" appears on pages 1-2, 2-2, and 3-4, the index will show the following:

Report, 1-2, 3-4

Word omits the reference to page 2-2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the product listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word 97.
