Works: Cannot Set Top Margin Below Third of the Page (138006)

SYMPTOMS

In a Word Processor document, the top margin cannot be set lower than a one-third of the way down the page.

CAUSE

In Works 4.0 for Windows 95, the header and footer cannot be larger than a third of the page. Because the first line of text starts at the bottom of the header, the top margin has this limitation.

WORKAROUND

To start a document more than one-third of the way down a page, do one of the following:

Press ENTER several times at the top of the document. This forces document text down from the top.

To use an exact top margin, format the first paragraph of the document with the "Spacing Before" set to the number of inches you want from the top margin.

For example, if you have a top margin of 1 inch and you need to start your document 6 inches from the top of the page, do the following:

NOTE: If you are just starting your document, you may want to type your information first, otherwise the following formatting applies to the entire document.

  1. Place your insertion point to the left of the first character on the first line of the document.
  2. On the Format menu, click Paragraph, then click the Spacing tab.
  3. In the Spacing Before box, type the following

    5in

    (6 inches minus the 1 inch top margin) and click OK.
The top of the document now has a 6 inch top margin.
