Publisher 95: Can't Use UNC Names in Find File Dialog Box (136914)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q136914

SYMPTOMS

If you are using the Find File dialog box in Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95 and you type a UNC (Universal Naming Convention) location in the Find This File box, you will get the following error message:
Publisher cannot understand the filename you entered.

You may have typed the name of the file incorrectly. Please retype the filename.

CAUSE

You cannot use UNC in the Find File dialog box to search a network drive. This field was designed to expect a filename. You must map the network drive from Windows 95 and then the driver letter will be accessible from Publisher.

WORKAROUND

Use the Windows 95 Find File dialog box to search a network drive without assigning a drive letter to it. The procedure is as follows:
  1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders.
  2. Click the Name & Location tab.
  3. Type the following in the Named field:

    *.pub

  4. In the Look In field, type the UNC name of the server and share you would like to search. Example UNC name: \\Server\Share
  5. Select the Include Subfolders check box.
  6. Click Find Now.
When you find the publication you are looking for, you can double-click it to open it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher version 3.0 for Windows 95 and Microsoft Publisher 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
