PRJ41: Filename Not Valid/Too Many Letters Saving Batch Print (136877)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1

This article was previously published under Q136877

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you save a print batch file using the BatchPrinting macro that ships with Microsoft Project, you may receive one of the following error messages:
<filename>
This filename is not valid.

-or-

<filename>
This filename has too many letters.
where <filename> is the name that you entered in the Save Print Batch File dialog box to save the file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you save a batch print file with a filename that contains a space character or with a long filename (greater than 8.3 characters).

For example, if you save a batch print file with a long filename, such as "longfilename," you receive the "filename has too many letters" error message.

If you save a batch print file with a filename that contains a space character, such as "this is a long filename," then you receive the "filename is not valid" error message.

The batch print program was created with Microsoft Visual Basic 3.0 which doesn't support long file names.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving either of these error messages when you save a print batch file, save the file with an 8.3 character filename without a space character.
