This article was previously published under Q136732

SYMPTOMS

Toolbar buttons may appear and disappear unexpectedly on the Office Shortcut Bar when you save files in Microsoft Office programs.

CAUSE

If you create a toolbar using the "Make Toolbar for this Folder" option under Customize on the Office Shortcut Bar, you may see icons appear and disappear on that toolbar when you work with Microsoft Office version 7.0 applications. This problem occurs because Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint create and remove temporary files when you save documents. The toolbar dynamically adds and removes buttons representing the temporary files located in the same folder to which a toolbar has been assigned.
