SYMPTOMS

If you print an object that has a color or grayscale pattern fill to an Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet II, III, 4, or 5 printer (or compatible), the pattern prints in pure black and white. The pattern won't be dithered to simulate shades of gray.

If you copy the object and paste it as a picture, the pattern fill will dither; however, it may be so fine that you can't easily see the pattern.

CAUSE

RESOLUTION

Many HP LaserJet and compatible printers support the PostScript printer language in addition to their native HPPCL (Hewlett-Packard Printer Control Language). This support is built into the LaserJet IIIsi and 4si printers and is available as an option on most other models. If your printer supports PostScript, you can print these pattern fills correctly using the PostScript version of your printer's driver.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
