SYMPTOMS

The width of an OLE object may unexpectedly increase or decrease when a document containing the object is converted multiple times between Word 6.0 and Word 5.1 for the Macintosh.

Symptoms differ depending on whether Word 6.0 for Macintosh, Word 6.0 for Windows, or Word 6.0 for Windows NT is being used:

  • When documents are converted from Word 6.0 for the Macintosh to Word 5.1 for the Macintosh and back more than once, OLE objects increase drastically in width. The object scaling width increases to several thousand times the original scaling width. In addition, the width of some objects may scale down to a negative number. (You can see the altered width measurements if you choose Picture from the Format menu while the object is selected.)
  • When documents are converted more than once from Word 6.0 for Windows or Windows NT to Word 5.1 for the Macintosh and back, the contents of the objects may disappear entirely. In addition, the picture height and width of some objects may be reduced to a fraction of their original size. This situation makes the object appear to be about the size of a postage stamp or as small as only 1/100 inch in width.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word 4.x/5.x for the Macintosh converters supplied with the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Method 1

Do not save the document in the Word 5.1 for Macintosh format while in Word 6.0. Instead, use the Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh converter to open the Word 6.0 document directly into Word 5.1.

For information on how to obtain the Word 6.0 converter, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

105319 WD: How to Obtain a Word 6.x/7.0 Converter for MacWord 5.x Users

Method 2

If the object has not disappeared, resize the object in the Picture dialog box by selecting the object and clicking Picture on the Format menu.

Method 3

If the object is a picture, copy the object and then repaste the object using Paste Special and choosing Picture.
