MPRJ4: Can't Cancel "File Sharing" Dialog When Consolidating (130204)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
- Microsoft Project for the Macintosh 4.0
This article was previously published under Q130204 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you consolidate a large number of files, you may
receive the following error message:
Microsoft Project cannot open any more files till you turn File Sharing off. Please switch to control panel and turn sharing off before clicking OK.
If you choose Cancel, you receive the following error message
The file '<filename>' could not be opened. Continue consolidating without '<filename>'?
where <filename> is the name of one of the files that you are
consolidating.
If you choose the Yes To All button to continue consolidating, the first
error message (about file sharing) continues to appear regardless of
whether you choose OK or Cancel.
CAUSE
When you consolidate files in Microsoft Project, each file that you
consolidate is locked by OLE. When you consolidate a large number of files
(more than 35) your Macintosh may run out of lock ranges, and the "file
sharing" error message appears, telling you to turn off File Sharing.
If you cancel the "file sharing" error message, and then choose Yes To All
to continue consolidating, and to avoid receiving an error message about
each file remaining to be consolidated, you continue to receive the "file
sharing" error message for each remaining file whether you choose OK or
Cancel.
WORKAROUND
To close the dialog box that contains the "file sharing" error message in
this case, turn off File Sharing by doing the following.
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and then
choose Sharing Setup.
- Under File Sharing, click the Stop button. In the
dialog box that appears asking how many minutes until file sharing is
disabled, type "0" (zero, without the quotation marks), and choose
OK.
- Close the File Sharing dialog box.
- In Microsoft Project, choose either Cancel or OK in the
dialog box that contains the "file sharing" error message.
Note that at this point, the remaining project files are consolidated.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft
Project listed above.
