SUMMARY

After using the Freeze Titles command in a Works for Windows spreadsheet, you may encounter difficulties selecting entire rows or columns.

MORE INFORMATION

Works 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b for Windows Spreadsheet

If you select an entire row or column after using the Freeze Titles command, only the area of the spreadsheet above the frozen row or to the left of the frozen column will be highlighted. However, the entire range is actually selected, as shown by the cell reference. This can be seen by following steps 1-4 below in the "Steps to Reproduce Problem" section.

Works for Windows 2.0x Spreadsheets

If you select an entire row or column after using the Freeze Titles command, only the area of the spreadsheet below the frozen row or to the right of the frozen column will be highlighted. However, the entire range is actually selected, as shown by the cell reference.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a new spreadsheet.
  2. Position the cursor in cell B4.
  3. In Works 3.x, choose Freeze Titles from the Format menu. In Works 2.x, choose Freeze Titles from the Options menu.
  4. Click the column heading B to select the entire column, or row 4 to select the entire row.

    RESULT:

Works 2.x: If you click column B, only rows B4:B16384 appear highlighted, yet the cell reference is correct: B1:B16384. If you click row 4, only columns B4:IV4 appear highlighted, yet the cell reference is correct: A4:IV4.

Works 3.x: If you click column B, only rows B1:B3 appear highlighted, yet the cell reference is correct: B1:B16384. If you click on row 4, only cell A4 appears selected, yet the cell reference is correct: A4:IV4.
In either Works versions 2.0x, 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b, any formatting applied while the row or column is selected will apply to the entire row or column. This includes changing the font, borders, patterns, column width, row height, and so on. Unfreezing the titles reveals the entire range as being highlighted.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works versions 2.0x, 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
