SUMMARY

Microsoft Money does not provide a simple method to convert bonds to stocks. This article describes a workaround.

MORE INFORMATION

To convert a bond to a stock:
  1. Create a bond investment, or use a pre-existing bond.
  2. Create a stock investment to which you will convert the bond. The stock name must be different from the bond name.
  3. To convert the bond to a stock, edit the Buy Investment transactions of the existing bond. To do this:
    1. Delete the price amount.
    2. Change the investment name to the stock name.
    3. Change the quantity to the number of shares of stock that the bond will be converted to.

Note Your brokerage or investment firm should be able to supply you with this information.
    4. Press ENTER and Money will calculate a price.
  4. You can now delete the bond investment from the Investment List, if you so choose.
When you perform this conversion, the price needs to be cleared from the Amount field before you change the investment to Stock, otherwise Money will recalculate the Amount field, which may result in an incorrect amount.

For example, a standard bond with $1000 par value would show as only one-tenth of the original bond amount.
