SUMMARY
Page 382 of "Microsoft LAN Manager Installation and Configuration Guide"
states the following in the Editing .INI Files section (Appendix C -
Microsoft TCP/IP Protocol):
For example, after installing Microsoft TCP/IP Extensions for LAN
Manager, the [networks] section of LANMAN.INI may include the line
net1=tcpnb$, 0, lm10, 39, 75, 9
(reducing the default for sess, ncb, and names by 1). If you later
try to increase the value of names in PROTOCOL.INI to 12, you will
still only have 19 names available, because that is the limit set
in LANMAN.INI.
The paragraph above should state:
For example, after installing Microsoft TCP/IP Extensions for LAN
Manager, the [networks] section of LANMAN.INI may include the line
net1=tcpnb$, 0, lm10, 39, 75, 9
(reducing the default for sess by 1, the default for ncb by 10, and
the default for name by 9). If you later try to increase the value
of numnames in PROTOCOL.INI to 19, you will still only have 9 names
available because that is the limit set in LANMAN.INI.
The original paragraph on page 382 suggests you need to set the values for
sess, ncb, and names in LANMAN.INI lower than the corresponding values for
nbsessions, numncbs, and numnames in the PROTOCOL.INI file to reserve the
needed resources for Microsoft TCP/IP Extensions for LAN Manager. The
default value for nbsessions is 40; the default value for numncbs is 85
(not 80 as stated on page 195 of this Guide); and the default value for
numnames is 18. The net1= entry above instructs LAN Manager to make 39
nbsessions, 75 numncbs, and 9 numnames available for the TCP/IP stack while
setting aside one nbsession, 10 numncbs, and 9 numnames for other
applications such as the TCP/IP Extensions.
