When All Characters is selected on the View menu (versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5, and 4.5a), or Show All Characters is selected in Options (version 2.0), special character marks such as the paragraph mark (backward "P") and space mark (a dot) change appearance, depending on which font is selected.
MORE INFORMATION
The paragraph and space marks are derived from the extended character set
(characters 128 through 255), which are not officially defined. Hence,
third-party or symbol font designers may place arbitrary characters and
symbols into the extended character set. Other special marks such as end-
of-line marks and tabs are characters that are generated internally and are
unaffected by the character set.
For example, if characters are typed using the Wingdings font and View All
Characters is selected, space marks appear as clocks, and paragraph marks
appear as five-pointed stars.
The Character Map program, which is included with Windows and located in
the Accessories group, allows you to see all characters and symbols within
a certain font.
