SUMMARY

When you use the Remove All option in the maintenance mode of Works for Windows Setup to remove Works files and shared components, the following files are NOT removed (listed by subdirectory):

MSWORKS Directory and Subdirectories

  • The MSWORKS directory itself and its subdirectories: CLIPART, SAMPLES, SETUP, WKSTMPL, and MSWORKS.CBT.
  • Any new documents saved to the MSWORKS directory or its subdirectories.
  • Any files, such as clip art files, manually copied to the MSWORKS directory or its subdirectories.

MSWORKS\WKSTMPL Directory

  • Any custom templates created

  • MSDRAW.INI (created when Microsoft Draw is run)
  • MSWKSWIZ.INI (created when certain Works Wizards are run)

  • MICROSOx.GRP (where x is a number or letter determined by Windows. Note: The MICROSOx.GRP file may not exist if you are running Windows 95)
  • The MSAPPS subdirectory and its subdirectories: ARTGALRY, GRPHFLT, MSDRAW, MSINFO, NOTE-IT, PROOF and TEXTCONV.

WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF Directory

  • CUSTOM.DIC

WINDOWS\MSAPPS\ARTGALRY Directory

  • ARTGALRY.IDX (created when Art Gallery is run)

  • PUBOLE.DLL

NOTE: VSHARE.386 should not be removed when troubleshooting issues with Works version 3.0. Works 3.0 does NOT install this file.
  • WKSOLE.DLL
  • WKSOLEUI.DLL
(* only with versions 3.0a and 3.0b)

IMPORTANT: Works also does not remove VER.DLL from your system. VER.DLL SHOULD NOT be removed. It is originally installed by Windows, and Works requires it for installation. DO NOT remove VER.DLL. IF YOU DELETE VER.DLL YOU MAY EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS RUNNING WORKS.

MORE INFORMATION

The system directory files are common to other Microsoft applications and are not removed. The shared program files, such as Spelling and Microsoft Draw, are also not removed if you choose to keep these files after choosing Remove All. Setup removes the lines it added to the WIN.INI file except for the section headers, the lines in the MSAPPS section, and the lines in the MS User Info section.

NOTE: After you choose Remove All, all of the Works sample files such as WINGLIST.WDB will be deleted, regardless of whether these files have been changed. If you are using these files, make sure you have a backup of them before removing the Works 3.0 installation.

Additional files are installed if you have the Works multimedia edition. For more information, query on the following article:

Additional Troubleshooting Tips

If the problem is not corrected when you choose Remove All and reinstall Works, try renaming the related files: CUSTOM.DIC for a spelling problem; ARTGALRY.IDX, ARTGALRY.THM and ARTGALRY.INI for a clip art problem; and/or MSWORKS3.INI for general problems. If these files are corrupt, they may cause general protection (GP) faults, cause the computer to stop responding (hang), and/or cause other problems. NOTE: Renaming the MSWORKS3.INI file will disable some Works functionality, such as the spell checker and templates.
