PUB: How to Autoflow Text Through Multiple Text Frames (124406)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0
This article was previously published under Q124406 SUMMARY
If you import or paste too much text into a text frame, Microsoft Publisher
can automatically put the extra text into additional linked text frames.
This feature is called Autoflow.
MORE INFORMATION
If you import or paste more text into a frame than that frame can display,
you will see the following message:
Inserted text doesn't fit in this frame. Autoflow?
If you choose Yes, Publisher will go to the next empty text frame it finds
and display the message:
If you choose Yes, this frame will be used. If there is no empty text frame
or still not enough room to finish bringing in the text, then another
message will display:
Automatically create text frames?
If you choose Yes, Publish will insert new pages and create text frames on
as many pages as are needed to fit all the rest of the text.
If you choose No for any of the above questions, the text will display in
the current text frame, and at the bottom of the text frame will be a
connect button with three black dots (that is, an ellipsis) indicating that
there is more text in the overflow area that is not currently displaying on
the screen.
To manually link frames or to get to the text in the overflow area, do the
following:
- Select an empty text frame or draw a new text frame using the text tool.
- Click the ellipsis button, and the cursor will change to a pitcher.
- Move the pitcher (cursor) to the new text frame and click inside.
The text will now display. If the new text frame's connect button has one
white diamond, there is no more text in the overflow area. If the connect
button has an ellipsis, repeat the above steps until all the text is
displayed.
The connect button can also display a chain. The chain indicates that two
or more text frames are connected to each other. Next to the chain will be
another button with an arrow pointing in the direction of the next
connected text frame. At the top of the text frame will be an arrow button
pointing back to the previous text frame. When you click either of these
buttons, the cursor will move to the next or previous connected text frame.
