SUMMARY

The type of network client you choose to use sometimes depends on the amount of memory the network operating system requires. This article discusses the amount of memory that the different network clients use before any protocol drivers are loaded.

MORE INFORMATION

The following chart shows the memory, in bytes, used by the different modules for each of the different MS-DOS network clients. The memory module is listed on the top, and the network client is listed on the left.

For clarity, the full name and versions of the abbreviations used above are as follows:
Add-On Full = Workgroup Add-On for MS-DOS, NET START FULL
Add-On Bas. = Workgroup Add-On for MS-DOS, NET START BASIC
   2.20 Enh. = LAN Manager 2.2.0, Enhanced
   2.20 Basic = LAN Manager 2.2.0, Basic
   2.2a Enh. = LAN Manager 2.2a.0, Enhanced
   2.2a Basic = LAN Manager 2.2a.0, Basic
   2.2b Enh. = LAN Manager 2.2b, Enhanced
   2.2b Basic = LAN Manager 2.2b, Basic
WFW Full = Windows for Workgroups, NET START FULL
WFW Basic = Windows for Workgroups, NET START BASIC
WFW Win = Windows for Workgroups loading the network when Windows
                   starts.
MSWGCN Full = Workgroup Connection, NET START FULL
MSWGCN Bas. = Workgroup Connection, NET START BASIC

* NOTE: If only protected mode protocols are being used, then PROTMAN takes up only about 400 bytes of memory when issuing either NET START FULL or NET START BASIC command. If you have Windows for Workgroups using only protected mode network drivers, and you only issue a NET START command, then none of the drivers listed above load in the memory under 1 megabyte (MB).
